Orthotic treatment for Neuromuscular conditions in Cambridge
Neuromuscular conditions include a range of conditions which are a result of problems with the central nervous system which is responsible for activating our muscles. Examples for such conditions include: ‘drop foot’, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT), Polio, Cerebrovascular Attack (Stroke) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Broadly, in these conditions the nerve signals are compromised which results in changes of the muscle state such as spasticity or paralysis. The long-term effects can vary hugely but one of the most commonly affected areas is mobility.
Treatment would be to improve the position of the foot, knee and hip, which has changed due to altered muscle activity. An Orthotist, who are the only qualified clinicians who can prescribe all types of Orthoses to manage these conditions, can help to diagnose and manage these conditions and provide appropriate treatment options whilst working in partnership with the physiotherapy team.
